Tautvydas SLEZAZ (Lithuania). 2nd day of the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship for men, Auckland, New Zealand. 03 July 2009.
AUCKLAND (FIBA U19 World Championship) - Lithuania has put any thought of an upset out of Angola’s reach with a powerful 31-15 first quarter on day 2 of the FIBA U19 World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand.
There would be no respite for the African runners up, with Lithuania extending their lead to 37 at half time, 48 after three quarters and 58, 104-46, at the final whistle.
Chief destroyers for Lithuania were Gediminas Orelik and Donatas Motiejunas, who both scored 23 points, while Matas Sapiega (15 points) and Rokas Simkevicus (14) also reached double figures.
Lithuania completely dominated the stats sheet, outrebounding Angola 41-30, handing out 22 assists to 6 and collecting 9 steals to 5. From the field the Europeans shot 59% to the Africans 25%.
Only Josemar De Carvalho gave the Lithuanians any defensive worries, scoring 10 points on 4/7 shooting.
The Angolans now must beat Puerto Rico tomorrow at 1:30pm and hope Lithuania can defeat Greece in the later group so they can progress to the second round.
Lithuania can possibly claim top spot in Group A if they beat Greece at 7:30pm at ASB Stadium.
