AUCKLAND (FIBA U19 World Championship) - Egypt has taken a big step towards progressing to the second round of the FIBA U19 World Championship in Auckland, making an incredible comeback to defeat Iran 95-91 in overtime.
An incredible 27-17 fourth quarter from Egypt saw the game forced into overtime after two free throws from Amro Sherif Abdelhalim with 6 seconds remaining tied the scores, 84-84. It had earlier appeared that a decisive second quarter from Iran had set up victory and passage to the second round.
Scores were tied 19-19 at quarter time, but a powerful 28 point second period from the Asian champions enabled them to take a 47-38 lead into half time. Captain Arsalan Kazemi led the way with six points for the quarter and 13 for the half. He finished with 17 points and 18 rebounds.
Top scorer for Iran was guard Emad Salmani with 24 points.
But the fairytale finish belonged to Egypt, who did not give in and threatened on several occasions before finally tying the scores before the end of regulation.
Sherif Abdelhalim was the star, collecting 30 points, 13 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists, and spearheading the Egyptian comeback. Centre Omar Tarek Oraby contributed 19 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks.
The African champions now face the USA at 11:00am Saturday morning, but even defeat will see them qualify for the second round unless Iran can defeat France at ASB Stadium at 5:00pm.
Egyptian captain Osama Mohamed said :
On their amazing comeback: “If we lose match we take the first flight out! Our dream is to make a good ranking so we fight with all our efforts to close the score. This group is Egypt and Iran for us. One will reach second round, one go home. France and USA better two teams. It is a good chance for us.”
On the fans: “They were great. We want to thank them and hopefully we have them again against the USA. It is our stadium!”
Will people back home be happy with win: “They will like it very much. They like us winning and getting good ranking...they will be very happy.”
