AUCKLAND (FIBA U19 World Championship) - Canada have used a massive rebounding advantage and a powerful third quarter to defeat Syria, 99-53, at ASB Stadium in Auckland.
The Canadians won the first quarter rebound count 18 to 9 and opened a 23-13 lead at quarter time. Syria came out more determined in the second period, matching Canada on the boards and outscoring them 18-14 to close within six at the long break.
But with an upset brewing Canada rediscovered their passion for rebounds and locked down the Syrian offence, allowing just 22 points for the entire second half. The Canadian offence also found top gear, pouring on 62-second half points.
The final rebound advantage was 53 to 27, while Canada also dished out 18 assists to just 8 for Syria.
Jordan Baker, Tristan Thompson and Laurent Rivard all scored 13 points as five Canadian players reached double figures. Canada plays Spain in their final Group C game at the North Shore Events Centre tomorrow evening.
